About Me

SUMMARY:

Nestled safely in the comfort of my Chicagoland home, true solace for me is no farther than a minute’s walk away. Cozying myself up in front of my computer monitor with my notebook and a can of Dr. Pepper in hand, I work my fingers to the bone at the keyboard with my passion for writing. Whether I’m writing short stories, novels, or reviews for others’ work, my whole heart is devoted to delivering my best product.

A LITTLE INSIGHT:

It was always apparent that as a child I never really fit in with my peers. I was... different. No, I couldn’t read minds like Sookie Stackhouse, I didn’t turn green when I became angry, and I couldn’t even fly like Superman despite my vivid dreamscapes convincing me otherwise. My deepest sympathies to my mother for always having to patch me up from my failed attempts at trying to become a Superhero. Apparently, an overactive imagination and a daredevil mindset don’t go together very well.

My distinctiveness was more of a mental condition. And before you jump to conclusions, let me just clarify that I was never eating-grapes-off-the-wallpaper crazy. At least, not that I’m aware of. Nope, my imagination and passion for films, books, and music at an early age always seemed to leave others with the distinct impression that I was, um, peculiar (to say nicely).

There was nothing more thrilling to me growing up than to see high octane explosions and big screen heroes kicking bad guys’ butts. When I couldn’t sleep as a kid, I would sneak downstairs and hide out in the kitchen while my dad watched all the great action films on the TV in the family room. Eventually, he caught on to my spying and  surprisingly enough, he fed my curiosity. We would spend nights after dinner sitting in front of the television as my eyes soaked in the images of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Clint Eastwood, Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford and Bruce Willis fighting villains and saving the day. In no time at all, I also became engrossed with the hard-hitting league of dramatic screen legends like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Gene Hackman, Paul Newman, Robert Redford, and Anthony Hopkins.

My desire and extensive knowledge of movies certainly didn’t go unnoticed by my teachers either. One time in particular when I was eight, I was given the assignment to compose a list of my favorite things. While my classmates wrote about topics and people like Titanic, Sammy Sosa, and Leonardo DiCaprio, I clearly didn’t have the same interests in mind. Needless to say when my teacher saw that I listed 1987’s Predator as “My Favorite Movie at the Moment,” I received a ghostly-white expression from her that read “I’m looking at a future serial killer!”

That, along with my father’s extensive music library and fondness of classic American muscle cars, my growingly eclectic love for Jimi Hendrix, Aerosmith, automobiles like the 1972 Cutlass, and  my own personal fascination with David Copperfield didn’t exactly help me blend in with the other girls. Funny thing is though, I never minded my eccentricities. My motto is “Let your freak flag fly.” Who wants to be another dullard in the world, right?

Thankfully, with the help of my mother, I did become more receptive to the whole “lovers-lament” femininity found in the works of Jane Austen and Nicholas Sparks. Nowadays, no genre is off limits to my likeability. I love foreign films like Volver, dramas like Cinderella Man, musicals like Chicago, suspense and horror films like Sleepy Hollow, comedies like Shaun of the Dead and of course adrenaline-pumping thrill-rides like Die Hard.

I can’t go through a day without dropping quotes from Pulp Fiction and Fight Club, and I’m profoundly obsessed with Quentin Tarantino, David Fincher, and Tim Burton. I also have curious fascinations with the Victorian era and Halloween. If I could, I would decorate my entire home in the Steampunk motif. Unfortunately, that’s a bit pricey, not to mention my family wouldn’t appreciate it too much. In my spare time, asides from writing and caving into my mild Dr. Pepper addiction, I love to draw, take photographs, and discover new music.
